On May 31, 2022, exam vendor Pearson Vue stopped providing examinations for the Board of Registration of Cosmetology and Barbering (Board). At that time, the Board also began phasing out the physical practical portion of examinations.
The Board is working to find a new exam vendor and hopes to have an announcement for schools and students soon, since exams will not be available for a period of time. Updates will be posted on the Board’s website and we encourage you to monitor the Board’s homepage here for new information.
120-Day Student Registration
The Board has provided a solution for students enrolled in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, and manicuring programs until a new vendor is secured, a new exam application process is created, and exams can be scheduled. The Board approved an extension of its current Apprentice and Student Employment Policy, which allows students to register as an apprentice or shop-employed student and keep their registration for 120 days after graduation. View a copy of the updated policy here.
Note: A registration is not a full license but does allow students to work under supervision and perform a limited scope of services for 120 days post-graduation while the Board secures a new exam vendor.
How Can Students Apply for a Registration?
Cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, and manicuring students can apply for a shop-employed registration using the updated application available here. Students can send their applications to the Board by email at cosmetologyandbarberingboard@mass.gov or by mail to:
