Minnesota Bill Amends Hair Education

It’s time to get tutored in texture and coached in curls! Governor Tim Walz signed into law Senate File 5289 (page 90) in late May, creating new requirements for initial licensure applicants.

A person applying for an individual license to practice as a cosmetologist, hair technician, manager, or instructor must:

  • Complete training on the properties of the hair and all hair types and textures, including coil, curl, or wave patterns, hair strand thicknesses, and volumes of hair
  • Have experience providing services to individuals with all hair types and textures, including coil, curl, or wave patterns, hair strand thicknesses, and volumes of hair
