Don’t just grab a round brush out of habit. When looking to create lift and polish at the base, consider a 9-row finishing brush. Molly Getz (@mollygetz), Sam Villa Ambassador, Redken artist and stylist at Soto Signature Salon & Spa, explains why here.
“The Sam Villa Signature Series 9-Row Finishing Brush creates lift by the firm nylon bristles that grip hair, creating just enough tension to control it,” says Getz. “And, the base of the brush retains heat from the blow-dryer, which locks in style memory and shine.”
“In addition, the rounded base of the brush adds a rounding effect similar to a round brush, but the difference is, with only having the round base on one side of the brush, you can work in smaller areas and shorter lengths of hair, or on styles that don’t require a consistent curve or curl to the hair that a round brush would create,” says Getz.
For tips on using the 9-row finishing brush across different hairstyles, try:
- Creating lift in the fringe area—use the first few rows of bristles to lift the hair up and away from the scalp while pulling the brush up and away from the forehead.
- Adding lift in shag and mullet styles—direct hair up and forward while rounding the root area out on the base of the brush in the direction of the style.
- Beveling the ends of short bob cuts—use to style sleek and smooth finishes with the slightest amount of bend to the ends.
