Wispy, flippy, choppy, invisible, short, long, curly, straight … almost every haircut has them. “But, what if you could fully master layers in a way that made them easy to understand, teach, and highlight on social media?” asks Sam Villa, co-founder and chief creative officer of Sam Villa and global artistic ambassador for Redken. Layers are happening at IBS, where Villa is teaching two classes with Roger Molina (@rogermolinahair), Sam Villa ArTeam and master stylist at Lunatic Fringe, focused on understanding layers in motion, best cutting tools for layering, and innovative ways of presenting actionable movement of layers on social media.
“Our class has a visual keynote that will shock the world! Ha-ha, joking; but it’s really cool and getting great feedback on Instagram,” says Molina. “It defines texture and structure in a way never seen before, which makes a big impact on teaching, understanding, and delivery of almost any cutting concept.”

Trendsetting Foundations explores foundational techniques such as elevation, forward and backward overdirection, and texturizing for 2024 cutting trends.
Highlights include:
- Elevation—how high or low to elevate a section; too low may leave unwanted weight, and too high may remove too much hair.
- Overdirection—utilizing this technique to push hair away from the face.
- Applying backward overdirection to direct hair to fall forward.
