If you’ve considered a change in career or a desire to instruct the next generation, Pennsylvania may have made that pathway easier for you. In late July, Governor Josh Shapiro signed into law House Bill 327 (HB 327), changing licensure conditions for barber teachers.
The bill lowers the age requirement for a barber teacher from 23 years old to 18. Necessary training under a licensed teacher to obtain a barber teacher’s license is being reduced from 1,250 hours to 500—an individual can still opt to obtain a barber teacher license with five years of experience instead of the additional 500 hours of training.
The bill also allows an individual who holds both a cosmetology license and barber license to obtain a barber teacher license if they complete the training and examination requirements for licensure as either a barber teacher or a cosmetology teacher.
